Available on both iOS and Android, Bulbul Audio has become an essential platform for preserving and promoting Afghan literature, supporting local narrators and authors while reaching a global audience.
The Challenge
The Afghan diaspora, spread across the globe, had limited access to literature and audiobooks in their native languages of Pashto and Dari. There was no dedicated platform serving this community's unique needs for culturally relevant content. The challenge was to build a robust, cross-platform mobile application that could deliver high-quality audio streaming to users worldwide, while supporting local narrators and content creators. The app needed to work seamlessly on both iOS and Android, handle varying network conditions, and provide an intuitive experience for users of all technical backgrounds.
Our Solution
We developed Bulbul Audio using Flutter for the mobile frontend, ensuring a beautiful, consistent experience across iOS and Android from a single codebase. The backend was built with Laravel, providing a robust API for content management, user authentication, and audio streaming. We implemented efficient audio streaming protocols that work well even on slower connections common in some regions. The app includes features like offline downloads, sleep timers, bookmarking, and adjustable playback speeds. Since launching, Bulbul Audio has grown to over 100,000 active users, created employment opportunities for local narrators, and become a vital platform for preserving Afghan literary heritage.
